About our members

All operators featured on this website are ASTO members.

ASTO is the umbrella body for Sail Training in the UK.

ASTO members are not-for-profit organisations who use Sail Training for life-changing youth development and/or working with disabled adults.

To become a member, organisations need to show that they comply with the criteria and fulfil ASTO’s aims. Amongst the criteria for membership are:

01.

Vessel Safety

All vessels are operated under the regulations laid down by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Requirements include the suitability of the vessel, safety equipment and personnel training. ASTO members carry more than the minimum required staff and are encouraged to implement a robust Safety Management System.

02.

Staffing

Staff and volunteers are recruited not just for their sailing ability but for their skills in working with young people. They are suitably trained to work on board, with RYA or MCA qualifications. Organisations have good practice guidelines to ensure the safety and welfare of Trainees at all times, on and off the water. Staff and volunteers are vetted and DBS checked.

03.

High Standards

ASTO members must have clear booking policies including joining instructions and kit lists for Trainees. Safety equipment and wet weather gear are also supplied on board. Crew details are securely held ashore in compliance with GDPR and vessel movements are regularly reported. Many groups and Trainees return year after year because of the experience.

About:

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that supports young people aged 8-24 in rebuilding their confidence after cancer through sailing and other adventure activities.

When treatment ends the Trust’s work begins because, for many young people, picking up where they left off before their diagnosis isn’t possible. Confidence grows by making friends with others who have had similar experiences, rediscovering independence and learning new skills. This goes beyond a one-off experience so young people are invited back annually.

Once 18, young people can also return as trip volunteers; having these positive role models is vital for young people in the early stages of recovery. The Trust’s sailing bases are in Cowes and Largs, Scotland.
