Bytown Brigantine Inc., a leader in youth development through tall ship sailing, is seeking a Chief Mate for the 2024 season (May 1 – September 1, 2025).

Position Summary: The First Mate plays a pivotal leadership role aboard Bytown Brigantine Inc.’s (BBI) tall ships, assisting the Captain in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and success of all voyages. As a key member of the ship’s leadership team, the First Mate supervises crew and trainees, facilitates sail training, and upholds operational standards. Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day deck operations, sail handling, and maintenance.
  • Supporting the Captain in navigation, safety drills, and emergency procedures.
  • Mentoring and guiding youth participants through experiential learning, fostering leadership and teamwork.
  • Leading practical training sessions and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Acting as a role model, promoting inclusivity, environmental stewardship, and BBI’s mission.
  • Essential Certifications
  • Transport Canada Certification Requirements. (Mate 150)
  • Canadian citizenship or ability to obtain appropriate certification under Canadian regulations.
  • Current Marine Medical
  • Current Marine Emergency Duty Certification
  • Vulnerable Sector Check


Maritime Experience

Extensive experience in tall ship or sail training operations. (Asset)
Proficiency in navigation, sail handling, and deck operations.
Familiarity with emergency response procedures and safety drills.
Leadership & Training Skills
Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise crew and trainees in a maritime setting.
Experience in mentoring youth and fostering personal growth through experiential learning.
Strong organizational and time management skills.


Compensation: Salary is TBD, based on certification and experience.
