PORTSMOUTH NAVAL BASE PROPERTY TRUST
Head of Boathouse 4
Salary £42k to £45k
Closing date: Monday12th December 2022
‘Boathouse 4 (BH4) is a unique heritage site, representing an exceptionally exciting opportunity. We are looking for a strong and business-focused individual, with a passion for maritime heritage who can balance the commerciality of running a charter business of a truly exceptional fleet of heritage vessels, with the sensitivity of conserving the nation’s foremost collection of small naval craft. With one of the country’s largest collections of steam vessels, more operational RAF launches than the RAF museum and more operational historic naval vessels than the National Museum of the Royal Navy, this is an extraordinary place. Housed in an iconic Art-deco building in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, the collection is moved by operation of the original 1940’s cranes. BH4 has a canal running through it, connecting the harbour to the Dockyard Mast Pond – an Historic Scheduled Monument.
As Head of Boathouse 4, you will be responsible for the operation of a nascent charter business, the care and maintenance of the collection, the care and direction of the Volunteer workforce as well as the Trust’s own staff, and the development of future plans for the Boathouse.
This is an exciting phase of development for the Trust as we are working with British Marine on the creation of a British Marine Training Academy, to be based in BH4, offering an introduction to the marine industry to young people and helping them into employment. You will be helping to shape the development of this ground-breaking educational approach and working with leading figures from across industry and government to deliver it.
BH4 represents the Trust’s primary visitor facing entity within the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. You will be responsible for providing excellent customer service for Dockyard visitors and ensuring the highest quality of education and interpretation of our collection.
The Head of BH4 will act as a member of the Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust’s senior management team and help to run the charity.’
