Ocean Youth Trust Scotland – 1st Mate

Position: Staff First mate – full time.

Salary: £24,960pa – £26,520pa, depending on experience.

Holidays: 31 days plus option to increase.

Benefits: 5% pension matched up to 7% and health care package.

Rota: Typically, 3 weeks on and one week’s relief in rotation, winter period ashore.

Main place of work: Greenock, Fairlie Quay.

Minimum qualifications: Yachtmaster Offshore (commercially endorsed) and disclosure. A successful candidate will be required to complete the relevant OYT Scotland assessment if not already held (depending on experience).

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland are looking for a professional first mate who holds themselves at a high standard of seamanship whilst supporting the skipper to deliver fun, safe and challenging voyages that are tailored to our clients each week. Young people should be empowered to make decisions and to take responsibility and should be encouraged to participate fully.

The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic team sailing out of the west coast of Scotland and beyond on adventurous voyages. They will be sailing between our two vessels, Alba Explorer, a 72ft challenge yacht and Alba Venturer, a 70ft Oyster.

A background in sailing larger vessels and experience working with young people would be an advantage to any candidate but all CV’s and experience will be considered and a training plan can be implemented for any candidate requiring training to pass assessment.

As part of the first mate’s role you will be expected to help to maintain OYT Scotland vessels in a safe and seaworthy condition at all times and under the Skippers’ guidance. You will also be expected to take part in the winter maintenance period in Fairlie Quay.
