Prolific

This is a fantastic opportunity to spend a season working as part of a highly-skilled, enthusiastic and friendly team, helping young people from all backgrounds to develop the skills to succeed in life on board Ocean Youth Trust South’s beautiful sail training vessel Prolific.

NB: There is one place available on an adult weekend voyage 15-17 October which might be an opportunity for a potential applicant to come and meet OYT South and see Prolific in action,

Introduction

Ocean Youth Trust South has traditionally operated with volunteer First Mates, but the Covid-19 pandemic has left the charity temporarily short of qualified volunteers: some First Mates are retiring while others have now passed Skipper assessments, while second mates were unable to sail for a year and a half and are therefore needing to refresh and consolidate their skills before tackling a First Mate assessment, with many still needing to complete RYA qualifications.

The charity is therefore looking to recruit a paid First Mate on contract for the 2022 season, to sail on voyages which we can’t cover with volunteer First Mates and to support the training of second mates to help them towards completing First Mate assessments, as well as encouraging those further down the ladder to develop the skills to step into the resulting second mate vacancies.

The post is offered for one season (January to November 2022) but the person appointed would then be able to move on in the industry with an exceptionally strong addition to a CV in terms of having been a senior member of a team on board a 32-metre commercial vessel, with extensive experience of working with young people from all backgrounds and working with and training volunteers.

Person Specification

Must be at least a Commercially Endorsed RYA Yachtmaster with experience on board vessels greater than 60 feet LOA. A Cruising Instructor or Yachtmaster Instructor qualification would be an advantage. Ideally you will have experience in Sail Training with young people.

Salary

Negotiable, but starting in the range £18,000 – £20,000pa pro rata.

Applications

Apply with a CV and covering letter which must explain why you are interested in this role with Ocean Youth Trust South, by email to [email protected].

Deadline Monday 15th November with interviews in the first week of December.
