“Nearly three years after my first Sail Training voyage with Rona Sailing Project in 2018, and I have not looked back since! Now clocking in over 2,000 nautical miles, I continue to be constantly challenged to improve my seamanship skills and relish in the unique situations each trip presents while supporting others as a Watch Leader.
Completing leg one of the Tall Ships Races from Aarhus to Bergen on Rona II in 2019 still remains one of my best travel experiences! On our two week voyage, we enjoyed everything from sunny days to long stormy nights on watch; peaceful dolphin encounters to great crew parties in Frederickstad and the natural beauty of the Norwegian fjords against the imposing mechanical oil rigs.
During this time we were responsible for setting sails, feeding the crew, cleaning and keeping morale high leading to a real sense of comradery. Everyone on board is valued has a vital role to play. The added bonus of no phone signal offshore provided a great digital detox and a rare chance to really ‘connect’ with your crew.
I will never forget travelling through the fjords with the breathtaking glacial valley towering over us on either side and the freezing swims in these awesome vistas!
Sail training is a real adventure and a great opportunity to meet new people from around world while also visiting some incredible places. I have made friends for life and have seen my confidence improve hugely since being a part of this community. An experience which has undoubtedly changed my life and which I continue to be grateful for!”
